Rethinking Networking
There’s no doubt networking can provide many opportunities. But does the very thought of “networking” send you into a tailspin? You’re certainly not alone! Thankfully, there are alternatives to networking events, and you can still reap the benefits.
Our founder and director, Emma Conroy, discusses it in this video. Otherwise, read on below.
“Networking” can make us think of awkwardly standing in a room of strangers, feeling too embarrassed to approach anyone and afraid of being shot down.
But networking isn’t just about events, it can take many forms.
Alternatives to networking events:
- Arrange a one-on-one or an informal coffee with someone you don’t normally get much time with, or someone you admire. This is a form of networking that is usually less intimidating and can be really effective.
- Get involved with a committee or a charity around a specific issue you feel strongly about, for example, diversity or wellbeing. If you’re passionate about a topic, it’s easier to get talking to others about it.
- Organise a mentorship. Perhaps your company has a program in place, or you could speak to your manager about arranging one for you. You could also use an external mentor, outside of your business.
- Keep it online! This is a good way to get started if networking in person is inhibiting. LinkedIn in particular is the professional networking platform, but not many of us use it to its full potential. You can research interesting people in your 1st, 2nd or 3rd-degree network, engage with their content, and get in touch directly. Some Facebook groups can also be active places for discussion on niche topics.
Ease your way in. Focus on what is more comfortable for you in the first instance. And later down the line, you might challenge yourself to start pushing those boundaries.
